Winter Skin Essentials

Updated: Nov 19, 2023

Taking care of your skin during the winter months is crucial due to the cold weather and low humidity which can lead to dry, irritated skin.

Here are some of my tips and recommendations for a successful winter skin care routine.

1. Hydration is Key:

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated from the inside out.

Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home.

2. Gentle Cleansing:

Choose a gentle, hydrating cleanser that does not strip your skin of its natural oils.

Consider using a creamy or oil-based cleanser, especially if you have dry skin.

3. Exfoliation:

Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells, but don’t overdo it, as excessive exfoliation can worsen dryness.

Choose a mild exfoliant with ingredients like glycolic acid or lactic acid.

4. Moisturize:

Use a rich, hydrating moisturizer to lock in moisture. Look for ingredients like hydaluronic acid, glycerin, and shea butter.

Apply moisturizer to damp skin to enhance absorption.

5. Sunscreen:

Don’t forget sunscreen, even in winter. UV rays can still damage your skin, especially if there’s snow, which reflects sunlight. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

6. Serums and Treatments:

Consider adding a hydrating serum with ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

Use products containing antioxidants like vitamin C to protect your skin from environmental damage. Reef Retreat MedSpa offers medical grade serums available HERE.

7. Lip Care:

Keep your lips moisturized with a hydrating lip balm or ointment.

Avoid licking your lips, as it can worsen dryness.

8. Avoid Hot Water:

Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils. Use lukewarm water for showers and baths.

9. Protective Clothing:

Wear hats, scarves, and gloves to protect your skin from cold winds.

10. Overnight Treatments:

Consider using overnight masks or treatments for an extra boost of hydration.

Apply a thicker layer of moisturizer at night.

11. Diet:

Eat a balanced diet with foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants.

12. Avoid Harsh Ingredients:

Avoid skincare products with alcohol, as it can dry your skin.

Limit the use of products containing strong acids during the winter months.

Remember, everyone’s skin is different, so it may take some trial and error to find the products that work best for you. If you have specific skin concerns or conditions, it’s advisable to consult with the staff at Reef Retreat Medspa for personalized advice and assistance with all your skincare needs.
